Fedex Day

Have you ever wondered why we have museums? Well, one reason is that we have museums as a place to go and see whatever somebody else created, using his imagination, his tools and his knowledge and craftmanship.

Last week we did a FedEx day at PeerTransfer. The idea of this is quite simple, you just pick an idea, gather a team, work on it and deliver it in one day.

We started quite early, at least earlier than usual, and we made 4 teams. We spent all day starting from scratch and building something that worked for somebody else. We felt as creators. We had fun. And we were proud of showing our work.

At the end of the day, we had 4 new artifacts we never had before:

  • A real-time map of payments from around the world.
  • Some automated scripts for running the top level layer of tests. These tests can now be invoked automatically after each deploy and manually from the team chat room.
  • A feature to have an internal status dashboard.
  • A browser extension allowing bug and enhancement reports while browsing.

Once we released the work, we did a brief demo to all the company and we asked to vote for the winner.

The map with the live payments happened to be the one that people liked the most.

The Map.
The Map.
